About Somerville
Just two miles north of Boston Somerville was named the best-run city in Massachusetts by the Boston Globe in2006. This was partially dueto innovation and efficiency for their 311 customer service helpline and a data-driven style of managing government services they call SomerStat. Somerville is an eclectic mix of blue-collar families, young professionals, college students, and artists – only New York has more artists per capita. In contrast to its modernity, Somerville boasts huge historical significance all the way back to the American Revolutionary War.
Just a few of the most famous area attractions:
The Historic Powder House
Considered one of the most distinct ancient ruins in Massachusetts – was home to one of the first hostile acts of the American Revolutionary War – the removal of colonial gunpowder by British soldiers, which sparked the ͞Powder Alarm,͟ a populous reaction spreading beyond Connecticut of militiamen streaming to Boston and Cambridge and forcing Loyalists and some British officials to flee to the protection of the British Army.
Dave’s Fresh Pasta
Legendary fresh pasta to-go and a fantastic sandwich counter
Davis Square
More than a night life spot, Davis Square boasts an eclectic mix of restaurants and coffee shops that draw a young crowd. The landmark Somerville Theatre showcases indie films and houses the Museum of Bad Art in the basement.
Zero New Washington Dog Park
A beautifully landscaped community park and Off Leash Recreation Area (ORLA) for dogs.
Allen Street Community Garden
Beautified space for the community to relax as well asto plant and grow flowers and vegetables. Allen Street Community Garden is one of the two ADA-accessible community gardens in Somerville.
